As a Toronto newborn photographer and mom myself, one question I hear constantly from expecting parents is:

“When is the best time to take newborn photos?”

The short answer: between 5 and 12 days old.

That tiny window is when most babies are at their sleepiest, most flexible, and easiest to pose in those sweet, womb-like curls that melt every parent’s heart. But I know life (and babies!) doesn’t always follow a perfect schedule, so let’s break it down honestly.

Why 5–12 Days Is Considered the “Golden Window”

• Deep, dreamy sleep: Newborns this young spend most of their time in that heavy, limp sleep — perfect for safely settling them into curled-up poses (think taco, froggy, or bum-up).

• Natural flexibility: Their little bodies still remember the womb, so they curl effortlessly without waking.

• Calmer sessions: They’re usually easier to soothe and less reactive to light, touch, or noise.

• Skin at its softest: Many babies haven’t hit the peak of newborn acne or dryness yet.

What Happens If You Book a Little Later?

Life happens — C-sections, premature arrivals, tough recoveries, or just the chaos of bringing baby home can push timing back. The good news? You can still get gorgeous photos; they just shift in style.

• 13–21 days: Still very doable! You’ll get plenty of sleepy poses, though babies are starting to stretch out more and become a bit more alert.

• 3–6 weeks: Sessions become a mix of sleepy and awake shots. Babies are stronger, more aware, and often give the sweetest eye contact or tiny smirks. Curled poses are harder, but we focus on natural, wrapped, and parent-holding images that feel just as timeless.

• Over 8 weeks: At this point, it’s more of a “baby session” — wide-eyed, smiley, and full of personality. Still absolutely beautiful and worth doing, just different from classic newborn styling.

I’ve photographed hundreds of babies outside the 5–12 day window, and parents always love their galleries. The photos simply reflect the exact stage their baby was in — which is perfect in its own way.

The #1 Way to Secure That Ideal Timing

Book while you’re still pregnant.

I only accept a limited number of newborns each month so every family gets a relaxed, unhurried experience in my Danforth studio. When you reserve your due date spot with a small deposit, we pencil you in around your due date and confirm the exact session date once baby arrives (usually within 48 hours of birth). No stress, no scrambling — just peace of mind knowing your spot is held.

If baby comes early or late, we simply adjust. And if plans change? Totally understandable.

Ready to Take Timing Off Your Worry List?

If you’re expecting in Toronto or the GTA, send me your due date and let’s chat. Even if you’re not 100% decided yet, reserving your spot now is the easiest way to make sure you don’t miss that fleeting newborn stage.

You’ll thank yourself later when you’re looking at those tiny, curled-up portraits on your wall.
