What Actually Happens If Your Baby Cries During the Session (Spoiler: You Still Get Beautiful Photos)

As a newborn photographer (and mom) with over 10 years of experience, I’ve heard this worry more than any other:

“What if my baby cries the entire time?”

Here’s the honest truth: crying is completely normal and it never ruins a session.

Newborns cry to tell us they’re hungry, need a diaper change, want to be held, or simply need a moment to adjust. We plan every session for 2–2.5 hours (sometimes longer) precisely because babies are unpredictable. There is no clock watching, no rushing, and no pressure.

Here’s what actually happens when your baby cries:

1. We pause immediately.
We stop posing, hand baby back to you (or dad), and let you feed, rock, or soothe however feels best. Skin-to-skin, breastfeeding, bottle, pacifier — whatever works.

2. We use proven soothing techniques.
Warmth, white noise, gentle rocking, and tight swaddling calm almost every baby. I’ve soothed hundreds of fussy newborns — it’s one of my favourite parts of the job.

3. We work around the mood.
If baby needs extra cuddles, we capture those tender parent moments first. Often the most emotional photos come from these quiet, real interactions.

4. Most babies settle beautifully.
Once full, warm, and snug, they drift into that deep newborn sleep perfect for curled-up poses. Even if it takes a few cycles of feed-soothe-sleep, we have plenty of time.

5. You still leave with a full gallery.
A fussy stretch never means fewer photos. We simply adapt — and parents are always amazed at how peaceful and dreamy the final images look.

One of my favourite client stories: a baby cried for the first 45 minutes straight. Mom was worried. We paused, fed, changed, and cuddled. By the end, that same baby slept so deeply we captured every pose on her wish list — plus the sweetest awake photos when she finally opened her eyes. Mom texted me later: “I can’t believe those are from the same day!”

The bottom line: your baby is allowed to be a baby. My job is to create a calm, patient environment where you can relax knowing everything will be okay — and it always is.

Ready to cross this worry off your list? Message me to reserve your due date spot. We only take a limited number of newborns each month to ensure every family gets this unhurried, stress-free experience.
